Apffels Innovation

“Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”

Steve Jobs

You could say, that it took nearly a century of experience to bring this level of thinking and innovation to a cup of coffee because it did and we continue to improve upon it.

Cold Brew, Nitro

1959. The year that the cold brew extraction process was born
and Apffels was there! Apffels developed a custom blend of coffee,
specifically for extraction with cold water. This extraction was
used to create the world’s first ice cream infused with coffee,
known as Jamoca®. 70 years later, we work with select
extractors throughout the US, providing custom coffee blends
for a wide range of extraction and RTD clients.

Manufacturing Innovation

Low carbon facility.
Computer-regulated temperature variables.
Okay, so we’re coffee geeks.

The perfect balance between art and science has one very important thing in common — it has to be inspired by passion.

It's our passion that led us to design, engineer, and build what some say is one of the most advanced food processing facilities in the USA. It also happens to specialize in coffee production.

Innovation by design:

Computer aided roasting: Temperature, time, and other roast variables are measured and relayed to our artisans to ensure the most flavorful and consistent batches.

Nitrogen flushed packaging: From the roast to packaging, the coffee travels in special air-tight conveyer tubes, and then nitrogen flushed so there's no air in the bag, keeping it roaster fresh until opened.

Warehousing: To protect freshness we run just in time manufacturing so the coffee spends just a brief time in our warehouse before it heads out.

Picking: One of the first to use hand-held devices in the field.

Tight Tolerances: Weighing every single bag for consistency to make sure the variances are as tight as possible.

Hi-speed packaging lines: When we designed our packaging lines for speed and stringent tolerances, we looked to the snack industry. Think potato chip packaging, fast throughput, critical weights and measures, best coffee packaging systems in the industry.

Low energy: Low carbon facility and implementing LEED standards.

Lighting: Natural lighting is combined with energy-efficient lighting to reduce energy consumption.

System Integration: Nearly every aspect of manufacturing is integrated. So in a way, we have all of our equipment in on the zoom meeting. Let’s not encourage the roasting equipment to started telling jokes, the conveyance system gets hiccups from giggling.

On Trend

We were instrumental in developing coffee-flavored ice creams
in the 70s, iced cappuccinos in the early 90s and functional foods &
superfoods at the beginning of the millennium. We maintain world-class
manufacturing and operating standards and look to continuous
improvement of our plant, staff, processes, and our coffee product offerings.
